NASA Research Projects

Current NASA space research investigations involve measuring Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation in astronauts. We will be investigating the combined effects of microgravity along with physical and psychological stress on immune function and latent herpesvirus reactivation in astronauts. To characterize these changes, we will measure changes in EBV reactivation using serological and molecular methods as well as tracking changes in EBV-specific T-cells. (Space Flight-Induced Reactivation of Latent Epstein-Barr Virus)

In October, 1998, Senator John Glenn made history as the oldest astronaut in space (age 77). As a participant in our experiment, "Effects of Microgravity on Cell-Mediated Immunity and Reactivation of Latent Virus Infections", Senator
Glenn provided blood and urine samples before, during, and after spaceflight. We found stress-induced changes in immunity in all crewmembers prior to flight. Interestingly, blood leukocyte and lymphocyte subsets were completely different between Senator Glenn and the other six crewmembers.
